Red Team and Clinic take Center Stage on phillyburbs.com

A few weeks ago the Hawks were excited to hear from Rachel Canelli of phillyburbs.com, who was interested in doing a feature about women’s hockey, and the Hawks.

Everyone had a great time, and Rachel even skated with the team! Thanks again on behalf of the whole organization to everyone involved!

Can 40 women set Guinness world record for longest hockey game?

Over at the Puck Daddy Blog on Yahoo Greg Wyshynski is covering 40 Canadian Women Who are raising money for charity, and trying to set the record for the longest hockey game…

“Around Day 3, people started to slow down a bit,” said Beth Snow, 34. “But we’re still playing hard. I thought we’d be doing a lot more floating.”

On Aug. 26 at the Burnaby 8 Rinks in British Columbia, 40 women split up into two teams and began competing in what they hope will be the longest continuous hockey game ever played — one that’s streaming live on the Internet 24 hours a day.

The current record was set in Edmonton during 10 days back in February, a charity effort that raised money for the city’s Cross Cancer Institute. The final whistle in Burnaby will sound on Sept. 5; should their efforts be validated by Guinness World Records, the players will have beaten that Edmonton record by 65 minutes.

To accomplish their goals, these women are literally living at the rink for 243 hours. Normal routines have been shattered. Bodies are blistered and aching. And if they don’t follow Guinness’s rules to the letter, they won’t set a world record.

Yet beyond pride and competitive fire, there’s something else driving them: The desire to raise awareness and money to fight Cystic Fibrosis, and honor the memory of those who lost their battle with it.

Full article after the jump.

Think you could skate for 10+days??

Updates and News for next season.

To start I would like to congratulate both Hawks teams on their seasons! It was an awesome year for everyone, making it to playoffs, placing second in the Red division and first in the White! Also a big thanks for everyone who volunteered their time for a hugely successful home tournament!

Moving Up, and Expanding!!

As most of you already know, both teams have expressed interest to the UWHL to move up a division, Red to White, and White to Blue. We are also going to be adding a third team to our organization! Because of the success of the Learn to Play clinics last year, we have a number of new players who are interested in joining the hawks, so many in fact, that we will be able to add another full team!

Since we are still in the planning stages, they will not be a part of the UWHL, but they will be practicing Monday nights at 9pm, and will be playing a few games this season against other Red level teams. We will offer that in conjunction with our clinic for new players not yet ready for games, or who have joined mid-season.

Important Dates, and Upcoming Events:
  • June 26th UWHL Meeting in Aston. Team reps need to attend.
  • Friday July 8th – General Membership meeting (for last year’s returning travel players) will be held 7pm at Jane’s house. Food and beverages will be provided courtesy of the club. Please see your email for details.
  • Friday July 8th – Fall season Travel Deposit ($150) is due/registration deadline.
  • Aug 4th, 11th, and 18th – Advanced Skills Clinic for Hawks players, details TBA.
  • Monday Sept 12th Take A Shot night (tentative)
  • Tuesday Sept 13th 1st Practice for White and Blue teams.
